To expand the regions and robotics curriculum, the students visited the surgical robot at Mercy Medical Center.They met with surgeons and nurses who explained the training required to use the robots. The students learned that the robots were used in a variety of surgery applications including heart procedures and general surgeries. Each student had the opportunity to sit down at the control station and attempt to run the robot to accomplish small tasks on the table. The experience was truly hands-on!
REFLECTION
While driving to school, I saw a billboard advertising the use of robotics in surgery at Mercy Medical Center. I was still in the process of planning the integrated curriculum and thought that a local field trip to connect our classroom studies to the real world use of robotics would be a great experience. After brief communications, the hospital allowed my class to visit. There was no cost for the trip other than busing and it was a perfect connection to the robotics unit.
I definitely plan to keep this experience part of the annual study as long as the hospital is willing to host us. I hope to find additional uses of robotics in the community, for example, in engineering or machinery found at the Timken Company. I want the students to see the application in different professions or get the chance to talk with other professions.
